Will Glassfish Validate Schwartz’ Open Source Strategy?
Will Glassfish Validate Schwartz’ Open Source Strategy?
Dana Blankenhorn @ ZD Net, March 20th, 2007
Glassfish is a Java-based application server. As such it competes with other quality open source products, and is a part of Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz' open source strategy.
Schwartz' bet was that Sun will, in the long run, make more money by leveraging an open source community and selling support than by keeping its code proprietary.
Will Schwartz's strategy be validated? The author discusses this further at this post

Just How 'Free' Are Open Source Licensing Models?
Just How 'Free' Are Open Source Licensing Models?
...asks Seth Grimes, in this April 10, 2007 blog post.
Seth feels that confusion and controversy about Open Source licensing exist, and that concerns are "both alleviated and complicated" by a profusion of options that range from GPL's communitarianism to the Common Public License's collaborative focus to BSD's laissez-faire liberality.
Analysing SplendidCRM's (SugarCRM extension) business model, he says "SplendidCRM's development process and the licensing model they share with SugarCRM seem immature. Open Source is most vibrant and successful, measured by adoption, quality, and profit potential, when projects are truly and completely free with the collaboration that freedom promotes." He obviously feels that SplendidCRM does not qualify fully as Open Source?
